Diagnosis

Myofascial pain syndrome is diagnosed during a physical examination. During the physical examination, Dr. Sammarone will identify the trigger points, an area on the body causing the pain, by applying pressure to the areas of complaints.

The doctor will also look for areas of tenderness during the physical exam.

There may be two types of trigger points present with myofascial pain syndrome:

  1. Active Trigger Point: Extreme tenderness is present in the muscle. A local or regional pain may be associated.
  2. Latent Trigger Point: A dormant area that can act as a trigger point causing a restriction of movement or muscle weakness.

Laboratory exams are usually not necessary because there may be no visible appearance of change such as redness, warmth, or swelling.
