Treatment

The treatments available for the condition vary a lot based on the location of the spinal stenosis and the severity of the symptoms. Therefore, in the eventuality that the symptomatology does not disturb the patient from his daily routine, then treating the spinal stenosis can be achieved via:

  • Enrolling the patient in a workout specifically designed for alleviating the pain and other symptoms
  • Following a specialized program that teaches the patients the ins and outs on how to engage in activities they like without aggravating the symptoms of the condition
  • Cortisone injections performed in the epidural area are effective in curing the symptoms in 50% of the cases

In addition to these recommended programs, patients could also try various home therapies in order to reduce the intensity of the pain. Even though they proved helpful for some people, it is necessary that the patients discuss the following home remedies with their physicians first:

  • OTC pain relievers
  • Using a cane/walker
  • Hot and cold therapy

In case the pain is too hard to cope with, it is possible that the physician will prescribe medication such as:

  • Muscle relaxants
  • Opioid based medication
  • Anti-seizure pills
  • NSAIDs
  • Tricyclic antidepressants

If neither of the non-surgical treatments, nor the prescription medication can help reduce the level of pain and discomfort, then surgery should be considered. More often than not, surgery constitutes a solution if the patient is in good health and if the condition has disabled him completely.
